Happy Birthday to Thurgood Marshall, born #OnThisDay in 1908.

As Director-Counsel of the NAACP LDF, Marshall argued many civil rights cases in SCOTUS, including Brown v. Board of Education. In 1967, LBJ appointed him Associate Justice of SCOTUS, where he served for 24 years.

Johnson wrote "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" in 1899. He was appointed US Consul in Venezuela & Nicaragua in 1906, and from 1920 to 1930 served as Executive Secretary of the NAACP, later teaching at NYU & Fisk.

#OnThisDay in 1917 Jeannette Rankin of Montana was sworn in as the first woman to serve in the US Congress.

Later that day President Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany. Four days later, Rankin, a pacifist, was one of 50 members of the House to vote against the war.
