The range of breadfruit trees is escaping the tropical band. On the one hand, yum. On the other hand, this is not entirely good news.

“What I like about this movement is that it is so positive. I think it’s awfully important to remind people when they feel no hope that there are wonderful solutions that don’t involve deprivation. [Regenerative agriculture] produces food that’s really delicious and much better for you.“

Career milestone. Finally attended a meeting of the Maize Genetics Cooperative. It was everything I’d expected from the legendary community. The science was invigorating, and I got to meet many of my heroes and the students who are the next generation in our field.

The new Interim CEO of #OpenAI speaks as a GPT agent.

It’s as though, having trained #ChatGPT + to recognize and generate human speech of all affectations, she is now being coached by it to speak in anodyne nostrums clearly calibrated to match a middle-of-the-road zeitgeist (i.e., “human values.”)🤓

“Avocados have been consumed for thousands of years in the region. But producing the fruit on an industrial scale for export dates only to the 1990s, when Mexico pressured the USA to end its ban on avocado imports, after opening its own market to American corn.”

“Restructured meat.”

“Most people would be extremely unhappy if they were served heart or tongue. But flaked into a restructured product it loses its identity. Tripe, heart and scalded stomachs are completely edible, wholesome & nutritious, and most are already used in sausage without objection.”

This is still true today, yet a 10% food insecurity rate prevails.

Also note, in this 1943 government propaganda, who “everyone” is, and reflect that during WW II the US enacted the “Bracero Program,” which imported farm workers from Mexico (and Guam) to replace farmers who left to fight overseas.

‘The advice the register offers to individuals feels faintly feeble; at times almost eccentric. For a “marauding terrorist attack”, it tells people to “run” then “hide”, which, though sensible, is not wholly comforting. The end, if not yet nigh, feels rather nigher than before.’

“Our food system is global, There are growing risks of simultaneous major crop losses in different regions in the world, which will affect food availability and prices. If you’re wealthy enough, you can get inside and put the air conditioning on. But natural and farmed ecosystems can’t do that.”

One other benefit of growing useful trees among annual crops?
