As a kid who went through homeschool in the mid-80s when it was just in its infancy, this tracks. Though in those days, there wasn't much concern about the "leaving marks" aspect, so much as on the maximum pain part. Dad had a board the size of a T-ball bat with a 2" hole drilled in the end.
