First snow here in Kyiv, and a little story about some dogs. Princess is not super confident, and we wanted to find her a playmate. Horse is a special boy, very good at making other dogs feel safe and comfortable, and sharing his confidence. They hit it off from the get go. 🥰 #dogsofukraine

I asked a few weeks ago if people wanted to hear more about Patron Center, the dog shelter where I am volunteering, and there was definite interest there. I am gratified that there is, since making what is going on in Ukraine a bit more real & personal for people was and is a goal of mine.

Starting a series this week talking about the shelter in detail. In the meantime, this is big, sweet Tosa Inu boy Mike. Post neuter surgery. I was sitting with him as he came out of the anaesthesia, to make the process less stressful. Temporary blindness is sometimes a side effect. 🥺 #dogsofukraine

Testing an export & upload workflow. This is Horse. he is a big, rambunctious adolescent. I love the physicality of playing with a dog like that. 10m of leash and a good harness make it possible. And when he has the zoomies like this, he is really hard for other volunteers to walk.

These two adorable beasts will be coming with me to the new shelter, and I could NOT be more pleased. There are lots of great dogs at both shelters, but these two are special. I love they way they play, until they hit the trail, and then right into calm walking. That's not CONSISTENT, mind you. 🤣

Question for anyone on a Mac... Are you able to attach videos to a Spout? When I try to attach any video, even ones that are really short, I can select the video and click upload and then... nothing happens. Ever. No video, no explanation.

Never in my life have I seen a dog this scared. Recent arrival from Kherson I assume. I’m going to be sitting with him for a while. Thankfully in the 15 minutes since I took that photo, he moved to a more sheltered place and has actually fallen asleep! 🎉 #DogsOfSpoutible #DogsOfUkraine

Dogs from Kherson started arriving today. We are acting as clearing house; doing medical and physiological evaluations, then sending some dogs to other shelters while some go to our Cattery that is quieter and adjacent to the vet. More tomorrow. And Sunday. And… 🥺 #DogsOfSpoutible #DogsOfUkraine

This one is so hard, both just to see and to "solve". Yara is probably a former hunting dog who is not handling her current situation well at all. Constantly paces in her crate, redirects on herself or staff when triggered, chewed off her own tail in frustration. This behavior is while on meds. 🥺

This is Lena. Very defensive in the crate, bite history and labeled as aggressive. I spent about 45 minutes one day just sitting on the floor talking to her and feeding her treats once in a while. The first few where taken begrudgingly while growling, but by the end I was getting a wag.

Big open house at the shelter yesterday, with this kind of turnout almost continuously from noon to 7:00. The focus was getting as many animals adopted, or at least fostered, as possible to make room for the massive influx from the Kherson flood that we know is coming.

Ledy used to be really fearful, but a little walking with Malish helper her confidence. But he wanted to play so I switched some pairings. Now Ledy walks with Maggie, who is also super timid. They are doing great!

And some days a dog gets the better of you. This morning Bettie was a right terror to walk, nose down and ignoring me like an irritating smell. I had a schedule to keep and I got grumpy. Halter work and some grooming as an apology.

Introducing shelter dogs to tug is entirely more complicated than I expected. Most show no understanding at all. With these two I started by throwing a toy, which led to the dogs playing keep away, and finally a little tug between dogs. It’s a start. #DogsOfSpoutible #DogsOfUkraine

Ledy is doing better. Usually she cowers at the back of her crate as soon as she goes back in, but here she is sitting calmly if a little hesitantly and observing. Also Friday morning walk included a toilet. For a really fearful dog that is a BIG DEAL. 🥳 #DogsOfSpoutible #DogsOfUkraine
