He's very good, but as Ben-Ghiat points out, his definition "lacks historical specificity", which can (and I'm sure, does) lead to polemical and facile use of the label. It enables use of it without the subject's meeting singular Hitler and Mussolini hallmarks, a good thing.

I am reading "Christian Twitter", white evangelicals battling it out. The stuff the new evangelicals are fighting is straight up 100 per cent fascist rhetoric, all political, nothing theological. Those men are calling evangelical egalitarians (there are a few) Marxists. No connection to Marx. Etc.

What's insidious about persecuting Ts is that it is also a wedge issue. The pers of larger groups, moving from gender/sexuality, to disabled, to ethnicity, gets easier once the Ts are gone.

Thanks for this. As someone with olde skool rellies in the low country, who spent significant childhood years in Africa, this is kind of where I live. (Altho actually elsewhere.) Always been aware of how enslaved people and black chefs thereafter made the Holy City food culture what it is.
