Deep into our annual NYE viewing of Interstellar. Coop is in the construct trying to get himself to stay. I'm not one to proclaim one thing or another to be my favorite, I like to leave options open. But this movie to us always gets better with repeated viewings. #newyearseve #movies #interstellar

Fall #whatsintheyard is a bit sparse after the relentless heat and drought in Austin this year. First up - not a bloom but the resultt of one - seed heads of Clematis texensis, Scarlet Clematis. It's native to the Edwards Plateau, also known as the Texas Hill Country. #gardening #nativeplants

Saw my first fall Monarch today. Healthy, strong flying female feeding on a Gregg’s Mistflower blossom. Gregg’s Mistflower is an excellent butterfly support plant, much better behaved than Blue Mistflower seen in the background. #gardening #monarchbutterflies #nativeplants #texashillcountry

The Sevilla Margarita: Dunno where I got this recipe - I cannot find it online. Amazingly, it's a margarita with marmalade and prosecco in it. This is a stellar brunch cocktail. The double straining step is key, you don't want the marmalade chunks in yer drink. #margarita #Cocktails #marmalade

Potential energy emergency this evening in Texas - oh what a surprise. In the graph you'll see some of the lines cross over and that's NEVER supposed to happen. So we've got our thermostat set on 81º for a few hours & have fans on. BTW it's 102º outside at 6pm central. #energy #TexasWeather #ERCOT

Next Tuesday will be interesting for Texas. ERCOT, the power grid manager, is forecasting a shortage of power that day. The first image shows the entire graph, the second zooms in and shows demand/capacity details. Might not happen, but who knows? #Texas #PowerGrid #electricity #ElectricityCrisis

Standing Cypress, Ipomopsis rubra, in it's first year of growth. It's a biennial & will stay in this little round form until next spring, when It will turn into a giant (5-6 ft tall) spike covered in bright red tubular flowers. Loved by bees & hummingbirds. #gardening #nativeplants #CentralTexas

Renewables are saving Texas' gravy in this insane summer heat storm. We have over 7000 megawatts of extra capacity right now and no concerns of shortage - due entirely to wind and solar. You can see on the fuel mix image that we are still burning WAY too much natural gas and coal. #RenewableEnergy

Standing Cypress is an unusual native flower. It's a ridiculously vertical member of the Phlox family. Some of these bloom stalks are 5 ft tall. It has soft fern like foliage & is biebbial. #standingcypress #Polemoniaceae #phlox #gardening #nativeplants #CentralTexas #TexasHillCountry #horticulture

Kind of mediocre year for Barbara's Buttons, but still nice - also known as puff balls! I believe this is Marshallia caespitosa. It makes a good cut flower BTW.

I like native plants & prefer using them in my yard. That is not an exclusive relationship however, and there are plenty of non-natives I can't resist. Gerbera is one of those. Added this one to a big pot for the patio. Gerbers are in the Aster family and hail from South Africa. #gardening #plants
