We don’t know the extent of the damage to the Patriot missile defense system in Ukraine.

But what we do know is a dozen or so “hypersonic” top of the line Russian secret weapon Kinzhal’s were intercepted to *damage* a 1990s Patriot that has been collecting dust for two decades.

That’s a win.

Bakhmut is virtually non-important from a strategic/defensive point. Problematically however, the geography to the East (Russian retreat path) is mostly flat, open fields with a decent incline. For kilometers. A full retreat would be exceptionally dangerous for Russia. Basically a shooting gallery.

In the past 24 hours Ukraine has covered portions of Bakhmut that took the Russians 3 months to capture.

The situation for Wagner is deteriorating by the hour. And this isn’t the “counter offensive” everyone is gearing up for.

Not to discredit Tristan in anyway.

But effective range does not have a major effect on counter offensives. The Storm Shadow is a great addition to the Ukrainian arsenal, but it is not a specific boon to this counter offensive. It will also not be available for deployment for several weeks/months.
Tristan Snell @tristansnell
BREAKING: UK sends Ukraine "Storm Shadow" cruise missiles with range of 155 miles.

Ukraine's max strike range up to now: 49 miles.

Game changer right as Ukraine is about to unleash its Spring #counteroffensive . Ruh roh.

Legally speaking “occupation” requires the occupying power to supplant “effective control” of the territory.

I.e., replace policing, governmental functions, even mail service in the territory.

Resistance fighters do not end occupation because they don’t have effective control of the territory.

The Ukrainian counteroffensive will begin.

We don’t know when or where, and there’s obvious reasons for that.

But it will begin sooner rather than later.

However do not mourn a lack of “total victory”. It could take months or years for complete liberation. But this offensive will be the start.

❗ The Ukrainian Red Cross warehouse with humanitarian aid in Odesa has been destroyed and a mobile hospital in Mykolaiv damaged due to a missile strike.

The staff and volunteers of the Ukrainian Red Cross were not injured.

Incendiary munitions are typically forbidden under International Law. See 1980 CCW Protocol III.

However, forbidden weapons is weak at best, 1996 Nuclear Advisory Opinion paragraph 21-22, 78.

Calling it a war crime would be… reductive.

Yes I did name these cases off the top of my head.

I can’t really agree. Twitter is an absolute extreme on one end, and Spoutible is at the opposite end of the spectrum.

While not nearly as extreme, Spoutible is clearly filled with Twitter refugees with much more like minded (read left) thinking.

This will inevitably change as more people join.
RA @intheweeds
If you think Spoutible is a political echo chamber, have you considered that the tone here may actually be reflecting what real people think when social media isn't overrun by paid trolls, bots, and hatemongers?

Yes, it’s horrific, but you need to see it. These are Ukrainian civilians murder in Kherson earlier today.

Thousands of civilians have been killed and millions have had to flee their homes.

You need to see this, you need to share this, you need to understand this.

Reading reports that Tu-22m bombers are launching to drop payloads on Kyiv, Kharkiv and other parts of Ukraine.

While not new, many reporters are concerned tonight’s attack includes tactical nukes.

2 things. 1 the West would be much louder if this was occurring. 2 Putin will be ousted in a coup.

Drone attacks strike the Kremlin at 3AM Moscow time.

There is footage, and Russia rapidly admitted to it happening - two very uncommon things for where this occurred.

It could be a false flag. But what exactly does Russia still have to give? Not much.

UNC 51 gives Ukraine the right to target within Russia.

But they still have to follow Principle of Distinction and Principle of Proportionality.

In layman’s terms. Is this train primarily military, and will there be minimal collateral damage?

There have been over 100,000 Russian casualties since December. Mostly in the Bakhmut offensive. Remember a casualty is a combat ineffective combatant. That means wounded + KIA.

To put this in perspective. The US had around 100,000 casualties in the 3 years of the Korean War. 6 months vs 3 years.

Correction Russia has incurred 20k KIA since December on ALL fronts. Not exclusively Bakhmut.

About 1/2 of these KIA are Wagner employees - who primarily have been in Bakhmut.

BREAKING: New US estimates show that 20,000 Russian troops died in Bakhmut

These are primarily Wagner employees. Unfortunately a lot of which are prisoners who have been essentially press-ganged into service. Little training/equipment sent into a meat grinder.

Remember that May 9th is “Victory Day” in Russia. A celebration of the USSR victory over Nazi Germany.

Celebrated as V-E day in the west on May 8th.

With the beginning of a major Ukrainian counter offensive today, May 9 may be a significant moral/political blow to Russia.

Just because I believe in Ukraines Art. 51 UNC right to self-defense does not mean I believe Russian soldiers should be dying by the thousands.

This war is illegal and unnecessary. No one (especially civilians) should die.

Russia is killing its young men for nothing more than the ego of old men.

Very glad the US Embassy was already evacuated.

I WILL speak on Sudan more in the future. It's a serious problem that will cause the suffering of many civilians. I have simply not researched it enough. Expect some threads when they are released.

What’s your favorite animes?

Tim has been an incredible front line reporter since day 1 of the War in Ukraine.

His insights are incredible. I would strongly suggest following him. Exceptionally upsetting to hear he was laid off, but I’m glad he’s committing to doing good work for the safety of Ukrainian people and the world.

Hello to readers. Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

Please echo this thread. It’s an important one.

Some career news: I’m leaving NPR as part of the layoffs that dramatically reduced the company’s workforce.

I’ve decided to go back into Ukraine to keep reporting.

American Bradley Fighting Vehicles are officially in Ukrainian service alongside Slovenian M-55s MBT and UK Challenger 2 MBT. I expect them to see combat soon if they have not already.

Hopefully Leopard I MBT will be in service soon, followed by Leopard II MBT and M1 Abrams MBT.
