It's balanced with life experiences (plenty of positives too). A young reader could handle it because it's inexplicit but still upholds the gravity of the darker themes (ex: racism in the way people speak, poverty alluded to by a person's tone, domestic abuse witnessed by bruises and screaming).

From the vignettes to the stream of consciousness writing style. It's the way each chapter gives enough detail of the theme or surroundings to keep us anchored but the stories keep us moving forward like a river. The crux of the story is alluded to but never directly specified. Phenomenal writing!

"No Speak English" comes to mind. The man saves his money and works two jobs to bring Mamacita and their baby son to Chicago. Mamacita is expected to acclimate but she's homesick. Mamacita resists the only way she can. It may be better to move but it was not her choice and that's tragic to me.
