English High School teachers: Now to the end of year is HARD.
Teach taxes. Do tax forms manually - each group can be a different income bracket. Understanding forms is very English content.
Teach rental agreements, buying a car and roommate scenarios

After teaching taxes, teach USA budget

I had a hs senior who chose the American Government Budget as his research project. He was from England.

Understanding the industry our taxes create and run is a traumatic experience.

I am teaching this topic: from a student's Job at CVS to the flower budget of the USA

Only 60 years ago

With the energy of pulling a person out of a fire.
With the energy of yanking someone off a train track

They put their hands on her, while others watched,
and kept this dangerous woman from entering

Thank God we were saved.

LIFE IN 1955 (4 of 4)
The mother? She was Powerless. No money. No car. No rights

Mark grew up to be a father in 1973. You, dear reader, know the rest of the story.

American society has not socially evolved as much as people wish.

LIFE IN 1955 (3 of 4)
The father beat him back and forth against the side of the Mark's body. This little one was bloody before the father stopped. He never cried again. Like an abused puppy, he still followed the father and still pretended to be like him.

LIFE IN 1955 (2 of 4)
One morning lil Mark cried after his dad when he got in the truck to leave for work. The father got a long thin switch from a nearby bush and lifted the lil boy up in the air dangling by his arm.

LIFE IN 1955
Little 4 yr old boy followed his daddy everywhere. Working in the vegetable garden he would follow and pretend to spit and pretend to plant. It was so sweet. Mark woke up at 4 am to be with his dad when he ate his ‘wipe up eggs’ and left for work at the plant. (1 of 3)

MLK was assassinated the same day "The Fair Housing Act" was put up for a vote. It was passed and signed quickly because of his death. I have always seen cause and correlation.

The four hour test was for a testing corporation - school got money for using students

Admin rained holy hell down on me for the no shows.
I embarrassed the principal, the county district, by not taking the test seriously. When the scores came back I got holy hell again.

lose-lose for me.

Admin to me: A new required state standard test for seniors is now scheduled for your class.
Me: required silent surrender; I repeat to my seniors -they moan and groan for all the right reasons

Next day: Seniors complaining their friends don't have to take this required test. What gives? (1o

Every time I go to the doctor - the final diagnosis boils down to "its your fault" I'm on my 4th doctor now - same response.

Eat right and exercise is the answer to all. Without asking how I eat or how much exercise I do the judgement is the same.

I have high blood pressure for 3 years now

The child custody fad of having a kid stay over midweek for one night, and then bounce back is a bitch for the kid.
Mom's computer is fast for homework/Dad's is slow - or vice versa. Paper and pencil are in the other backpack. etc, etc

You can see it in their eyes - just worn out.

I came to school early - 7:00 AM to work. Lots of HS students, sleeping or studying. Mom/Dad have to drop them off because the commute to Atlanta is arduous.
Some kids are hungry - they know the classrooms to go in. The cafeteria is not open (it's for-profit separate from the school)

Students I taught when NCLB started are now 30ish. Critical thinking stopped with NCLB. CRCT kids have to be told what to do. They can not forecast, think ahead, strategize, solve simple challenges,

Just tell them what to do. NCLB created these adults

Teachers have to buy their own liability insurance for school grounds.
Teachers have to work unpaid, on their time, every week

My HS is filled with fantastic C students who always make As. Grade inflation is everywhere in order to appease parents.
Admin will not support the teacher (my school) so does a teacher lay her neck on the line?

Year 10 of your career - still laying your neck on the line?

I have a C student. His parents want him to be an A. They demand I sign accommodations for his SAT. I don't sign since he always finishes tests early.
Parents go to school board and file a formal complaint against me that I am racist. Now I wait.

I feel sorry for Johnny - he's a great kid

Day in the classroom: I have to teach writing; cursive is not taught; I sign up for the writing lab which has 35 computers. Admin took my reservation for testing at the last minute (the fifth time). With 38 kids I cant use the laptop carts from media center. Rich demographic HS.

A day in a classroom of General English: An AP Bio teacher has his students memorize a poem to recite. It is 3 page poem. He wrote it. They are traumatized 17 yr old kids with this assignment. AP teachers can throw down anything - academic sense or not.

I wish parents knew what AP really was

The Daily Mail and The Independent are English tabloids that own personal data on American school kids. The company sells that data for revenue. If your child is deemed overweight at 12 they are prime for weight loss companies when 18. Parents have no idea. School is paid $$ for access to kids

Naviance is a school software that 2/3rd of high schools & middle schools use. They collect data on your kids and sell it for profit. Seniors have to complete their survey in order to walk in graduation. Naviance is owned by the Daily Mail, a tabloid in England. Now they sell info to advertisers.

Who is Naviance? tomorrow

Today 1st period. half of the class Starbucks with espresso shots. One student drinks a liter of mountain dew each morning for breakfast. Learning between 8:30-9:20 is nonexistent. No one got 6 hours of sleep - mostly 4 hours.
My salary is supposed to depend on their performance.
