Scientists have concluded that the variations in human hair texture is in direct response to the thermal environments different early people groups faced to survive. Those in hotter climates had scalps that produced hair of tighter coils as genetic protection of the head.
06:54 AM - Feb 04, 2024
Scientists also agree that the reproductive patterns of early people groups migrating to different parts of the world also impacted variations within variations of human hair texture. The African continent's variations in hair texture are emblematic of this mixing.
07:01 AM - Feb 04, 2024
Hair historians have traced the beginnings of hair braiding and locing to the African continent in the year 3500 B.C. Patterned braids and locs of specific colors/lengths helped distinguish tribes from each other. This method of tribe and clan differentiation was spread to other parts of the world.
07:08 AM - Feb 04, 2024
It wasn't until the 15th century that Europeans began calling the Black hair texture "dirty" and "unclean." Black hair was also called "woolen" akin to animal fur and beastiality. This change in perspective coincided with the 1444 Portugal start of the African slave trade.
07:14 AM - Feb 04, 2024
During the African slave trade, most enslaved victims had their heads completely shaven prior to loading onto slave ships. The hair was removed to,
1. Reduce the spreading of lice and disease.
2. Prevent the hiding of small weapons to escape.
3. Disconnect the enslaved from their homelands.

It's also noteworthy to know that the shaving of Black enslaved women's hair worked to further dehumanize them in many slave traders'eyes. Did this lack of head hair add to the sexual violence against these women during the Journey of No Return? We don't know, but suspect it did.

Once in America, many enslaved women and men regrew their shaven hair. Black enslaved women, in particular, used scraps of materials to adorn their heads until their hair returned to a noticeable length. Early colonists didn't mind this until slave revolts began.

At the same time as Post-Colonial America began outlawing certain Black enslaved hairstyles, the British began colonizing tribes in the African continent. They saw the loc styles as "dreadful" indicators of belligerent natives. Soon the term "dreadlocks" became a war term.

The wearing of head scarves and bandanas became common among Southern US enslaved people. The head attire protected their hair from drying out in the sun from hours working in dust and the fields. Slaveowners preferred the headgear as long as the fabric patterns were minimal with no secret messages.
