“When things were very bad his soul just crawled behind his heart and curled up and went to sleep.” Bailey had seen a dead black man pulled from a pond and was consumed by horror. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint

Yes, much more structure at their grandmother’s place. There was a predictable daily routine. Living in Chicago seemed to entail less routine. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint

The brain abhors blank spaces and will fill in or interpret unfamiliar experiences anchored in any existing knowledge. Children understand disapproval and pleasing adults, so that is how even unpleasant events are framed. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint

Segregation was absolute and punitive at that point in time. Whites were to be feared and avoided because racist violence could occur at any time. A horrible way to be forced to live. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint

Books provided solace and a book of poems saved her from being trapped in her trauma. The poetry helped her to begin processing the sexual abuse. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint

Yes, I did, and a similar array of women provided support and mentorship. My mom, my grandmothers, and several memorable teachers. Guidance and support from my family & new perspectives from my teachers. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint

Perseverance is threaded through the book. Persevering in economic hardship, discrimination, following abuse & rape, and in reaching through to someone closed off after abuse. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint

American society defines beauty by white standards. Those with dark skin and natural hair can’t be beautiful unless they try to mimic whites in some way. This marginalizes people. #SBBC #cagedbirdtalkingpoint

Heroes are sorely lacking in this story. For me, two could be heroes, Roland Pattillo and Courtney Speed. Pattillo because of the conf. honoring Henrietta and Speed because of attempt to found a museum and protect the family.

2/2 Threaded Spouts #SBBC #ImmortalLife What happened in those research studies never should have been allowed. But marginalized populations were viewed as chattel. Research regulations strictly prohibit abusing vulnerable populations now.
