I understand your perspective, but the devil is in the details: exactly what rules do you think will somehow improve the situation, rather than simply open up a number of loopholes through which the "fallible/corrupt humans" can legitimize their authoritarianism?

Not to be argumentative, but it was more "take over" than "take hold". The VRWC/RRR ("vast right wing conspiracy"/rich racist Republicons) bought up every AM radio station they could, mostly displacing sports radio but in the latter years also targeting any profitable "liberal" talk radio stations.

Why the heck not? I was very upset to learn from this article that "most of urban America" was burned down in 2020. /s

"[...]our politics have regressed to the point that so many Americans can no longer distinguish what’s real and what’s not."

The truth is this isn't at all restricted to politics. The problem of postmodernism is pandemic. "Real" isn't as simple a thing as we're used to assuming. 5/5

"that our parties can’t mitigate the problem[...]"

The use of plural here is problematic. It is inaccurate. 1) One party does mitigate the problem of the paranoid style, one party doesn't. 2) "Our parties can't" suggests the parties, rather than the elected officials, control the government.

"that too many of our elected officials aren’t responsible leaders,[...]"

It seems reasonable to bemoan the fact that many officials aren't leaders, but "too many" is a bit strawman-like, particularly when no effort is made to quantify or analyze which are and which aren't.

"After January 6, it’s obvious that we’re failing, [...]"
Ironically, such an evaluation is a bit paranoid. The J6 insurrection failed, and many involved have been imprisoned after fair and legal trials.

An interesting and insightful analysis. Such a shame the author completely botched his conclusion.

Truth is all self-govt is, has always been, and can only be based on this "you'll have to trust me to be trustworthy" principle, and the Founders were well aware of this, accounting for it rather than denying it. Checks & balances, separation of powers, they help, but they do not end the conundrum.

It's a weird inversion of "American exceptionalism" that makes people think this is particular to America. Certainly we need to improve the USA, but I think we also need to stop fantasizing there is some utopia elsewhere (btw, not coincidentally in the whitest of white areas of Europe, amiright?)

NOTHING matters more than voting. ***Literally*** NOTHING. People who say that their vote doesn't matter are confusing voting with their candidate winning. It's a failure of education, imagination, and patriotism to think that only votes for the winning candidate "count".

Forgive me for being blunt, but shut up with that nonsense. I appreciate that YOU BELIEVE that Trump predicting violence would ensue constitutes a directive or threat, but that doesn't make it an actionable crime.

I kind of like the labels "Democrat" and "liberal". Anyone who wants "no labels" is trying to suggest otherwise.

... I can't see any other way to be so 'typical' in usage that you stay "normal 0%". Plus, once the algorithms have been reverse engineered, bots can be programmed to still be bots while maintaining such a profile. There's no such thing as an algorithm that can't be gamed by another algorithm.

I think it would be a tiny bit less controversial (not that it matters; the whole point of this thread is that uncontroversial is not the same as accurate) if they used the term "mundane" rather than "normal". It is, in fact, not "normal" to be 0% interesting, and without knowing the details...

I am in complete agreement. BUT...

Until you can deal with the reasonable-but-**illogical** idea that people are not *identical* but are still *equal*, you're a postmodernist, and can't understand truth.

What makes you think there's any "vaccine only strategy", or that the President could have saved any lives by harping more about COVID? CDC guidelines are definitely not "vaccine only", and when people ignore them, it's hardly Joe Biden's fault.
