thread 3 Threaded Spouts
I was lucky earlier this week to hear Ellen Hopkins give a keynote on book banning, a subject she (unfortunately) knows quite well. She was so incredibly eloquent in her advocacy for teens to be able to read books (like hers) that tackle very difficult topics and themes that too many teens are quite

The 3 Black people killed by an avowed white supremacist/hater of Black people:

Anolt "AJ" Laguerre Jr., 19

Jerrald De'Shaun Gallon, 29

Angela Michelle Carr, 52

Our children need to be truthfully and lovingly educated so that they, too, won’t be indoctrinated.

It has been a while! Summer is a crazy time in the library, but we wrapped up summer reading and it was great! The teens have a new fabric press coming (they voted on the community prize)!
I really love my job #librarylife #TeenLibrarian

My grandma just turned 90! She is an amazing woman and I love her to pieces.
Growing up, she was always wanting to help, taking people's dishes to the sink or helping them with laundry, etc. TBH, it started to be expected of her (which was NOT cool). When she turned 80, she started saying "no"...

So excited! Tomorrow is the first of many summer reading presentations at the local schools in Petoskey! I will present to about 200 8th graders tomorrow and it is going to be awesome!

Every summer, the teens vote on a community prize for summer reading (as opposed to individual prizes). Last summer they voted to get a "doodle board" and it has been the BEST addition to our teen area in a long time! #libraries #TeenLibrarian #SummerReading

If you are interested in how you can help fight against book bans (and the gross, racist history of book bans), give this article a read. It is quite excellent!

I was just informed of a challenge to one of my teen nonfic sex ed books. "Let's Talk About It" by Erika Moen. Compiling reviews and getting ready to defend the book and its placement in the teen collection. Please remember to support your local libraries and librarians! We are so tired. #libraries

The ALA has released their annual list of the most challenged/banned books of the year. Just like most years, most of these books are written for teens. It aggravates me to no end when people pick on books for teens AND completely miss the point of the books.

One of my favorite things to do in the library is STEAM activities with teens/tweens...
We have not one but TWO solar eclipses coming in the next year! We are definitely planning some fun STEAM programs at my library, so everyone should keep an eye out for these types of events at local libraries!

As a teen services librarian, I have to say times are rough. However, nothing and nobody will stop me from doing my job and making sure library space is welcoming and safe for ALL patrons! Book banners and bigots will not ruin public libraries...
All that said, I'm tired. But I'll never quit.

"A Mighty Girl" is supposed to empower girls -- but I think they only have white girls in mind. They lift Laura Ingalls Wilder and her books, but there's stereotyping/biased content about Native peoples and she's also got Pa in blackface. Wilder and A Mighty Girl get a red X from me.

Super excited to announce that I will be facilitating book discussions starting in April for the "Stories of Exile" program, which is a reading program through the Yiddish Book Center! The books are translated from the original Yiddish and explore themes of displacement, migration, and diaspora.
