Everything that's old is new again. Cons can't even make up their own culture war ideas, they simply rotate on a 30 year loop. This is an excerpt from David Neiwert's "The Age of Insurrection".

22/52 Mary L. Trump's follow up book about the former guy. The Reckoning. Good analysis of how racism was built into the American system, DJT's role in perpetuating the trauma and how he rolled back all progress that was achieved. Audiobook: 5h30m. 8/10

21/52 Cmdr Chris Hadfield's first foray into fiction is well worth the investment. He mixed real world characters and events, and lived experience, into a compelling story of cold war, military moonshots. A rare book where the Soviets don't come off as totally unhinged. 463p. (9/10) #BookSpout

20/52 Good timing on finishing this book on the eve of #Arrestmas . NYT reporter's book centering on Don McGahn and his efforts to thwart Trump's most insane ideas. DM isn't a sympathetic character, but even in all the evil, it's insane to think it could have been worse. 15hours (6/10) #BookSpout

19/52 Ducks is a masterclass of a novel. Intertwines subjects like the exploitation of the worker class, men's tribalism, sexual violence in the workplace in a way that isn't preachy, but makes you see them in a whole new light. This book deserves all the awards it gets. 430p. (10/10) #BookSpout

18/52 March Book Two describes the unbelievable violence of the Montgomery Bus Boycotts and the politics involved with the March on Washington. Lewis even included the draft of this speech that was censored by the event organizers. This book stopped me in my tracks. 187p.(9/10) #BookSpout #JohnLewis

17/52 One of my favorite graphic artist, Guy Delisle, wrote this book about a non-profit worker, Christophe André, and how he survived his 1997 kidnapping in Chechnya. The loneliness and sensory deprivation jumps out of the pages. S'enfuir: Récit d'un Otage, 428p. (7/10) #BookSpout

16/52 American Huckster by Mary Papenfuss & Teri Thompson. Detailing the incredible amount of corruption by Chuck Blazer and friends involved in awarding WCs for FIFA. Led to the indictment of 30+ people and the resignation of Sepp Blatter. It was corruption all the way down. 218p. (6/10) #BookSpout

15/52 Pennyworth Vol 1-7. Confusing at times, it jumps back and forth from the cold war to today, I was pretty impressed, ultimately, with the debut volumes of a new comic with no previous canon to rely on. Alfred is a character I want to learn more about. Spying and Sci-fi at the same time (8/10)

14/52 After reading Carry On, I sought out the graphic novels Lewis wrote to memorialize his fight for Civil Rights in the 60s. The first one details how he met MLK, the birth of the Nashville Student Movement, and the beginning of the non-violent sit ins at lunch counters. 121p. (9/10) #BookSpout

13/52 David A. Roberstons' last installment of The Reckoner trilogy. Government experimentation on First Nation kids in northern Manitoba creates an angsty, unwilling superhero! Add in a healthy dose of tricksters. What's not to like? 221p (7/10)

11 & 12/52 The last two installments of a comic book about the political and business shenanigans around the events of 9/11. They easily fall into the land of conspiracy and speculation but I was entertained and captivated for all 6 chapters. 49p ea. (6.5/10)

How are any of these statements being made in the same breath? Masks are important, but no longer required. They are part of a multi-layered Covid mitigation strategy, but we won't ask you to do that anymore. Looks like I have to add work to the places where I'm the only one still masking
