Much of the #Hilary attention is on SoCal, but Las Vegas could get its wettest storm ever observed. The 3-day record is 2.59" on Aug 20-22, 1957. NWS: "Concrete washes throughout the Las Vegas Valley will be incredibly dangerous and potentially deadly."

Even at 17.5 feet, "water covers the streets in downtown Montpelier." The current prediction of a Mon-night crest of 19.8 feet would be disastrous--the highest in nearly 100 years.

Lest anyone think the image below is some kind of mapping error, SST reports from buoys in the Florida Keys as of ~7 PM ET Sun are downright shocking, e.g.:

Key West 92.1F
Vaca Key 94.3F
Johnson Key 95.7F
😱
Caveat: these are one-hour readings vs. the one-day readings shown on the map. Still!

Flash flooding heads-up: 6"+ of rain possible in spots from PA to VT on Sun, & more Mon. Per NWS/WPC, "portions of east central VT have a 30% chance of exceeding 100-year annual return intervals for the amount of rain expected"

I caught these unearthly mammatus clouds west of the Kimball NE area just after sunset on Fri 6/23/23. They were generated by a severe storm complex in far NE CO. Image (c) Robert Henson.

If Sunday's official forecast high of 120F at Rio Grande Village, TX, comes to pass, it will tie the all-time high temperature for the entire state of Texas, first recorded on August 12, 1936, in Seymour—at the height of the Dust Bowl— and again on June 28, 1994, in Monahans.

Ochiltree is a big county (about 30 x 30 miles)...and yet a powerful tornado happened to strike the town of Perryton, where more than 80% of the county's entire population lives. On top of that, it ravaged an especially vulnerable area: a manufactured/mobile home park :-(

Several days in #Pensacola history have seen even heavier rain than the 9.30" on Thurs (e.g., 13.13" fell on 6/9/2012). But more rain is inbound.
Another 11" today (Friday), and the city's all-time two-day record of 20.47" (4/29-4/30/2014) might be challenged.

Global temps topped 1.5C (for 2 months) during the potent 2015-16 El Niño, and in 2020. Now we've briefly topped 1.5C again.

Will a multiyear average top 1.5C, and if so, how soon? A great explainer:

thread 2 Threaded Spouts
Eye-popping and worrisome to see a tornado-based moderate risk on June 14 this far south, where something like this would be more likely in February or March. These will be fast-moving storms, too, with an unusually strong jet stream for the location/season.

As La Niña segues into an expected El Niño, the fierce drought in the Plains/High Plains is set to lose punch. Rainfall over the next 7 days will be beautifully placed for drought relief, especially over TX/OK.

Even the "inflation-adjusted" graphic below (which accounts for increased chasing/spotting since the 1990s) confirms that 2023 is on a blistering, record-ish pace for reported U.S. tornadoes. https://spc.noaa.gov/wcm/

Left: SPC Day 2 midday update for Fri 3/31
Right: SPC Day 2 midday update for Tues 4/4

[cue "Twilight Zone" theme...]

Biggest difference will be timing. The stouter cap on Tues 4/4 should push supercells toward the late-PM/overnight hours. Not good for tornado safety :-(
