Sarah Huckabee Sanders' LEARNS Act tries to censor what kids learn, but the #LR9 explain that only makes them more motivated to share their history https://arktimes.com/news/...

Grading student papers that compare ChatGPT, Wikipedia, and primary + secondary sources on topics in the history of U.S.-Latin Am relations. Interesting that most students conclude that history students should be very skeptical and wary of using either as anything other than an intro to topic.

Bringing back the FCC Fairness Doctrine (abolished by Reagan's FCC in 1987), and applying it to Cable and Broadcast, would help so much with our Fox problem. Upheld by the Supreme Court as legal in 1969, Reagan's FCC repealed it in 1987, then we got Rush LImbaugh and a steady decline.

My response to some "conversations" in bird-land today

1. The right is banning books, not the left. Disliking a book is not banning it. Stop saying it is.

2. We're a democratic republic; our Constitution creates a democratic gov't. Saying "WE'RE A CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC" doesn't negate that fact.

Great discussion in Historian's Craft class tonight about history and the news media + social media. Exit summaries showed students overwhelmingly think historians should engage w/ public via social media. I think I have vastly underestimated importance of social media as an info source for Gen Z.

Interesting to note:

When antebellum members of Congress were censured and resigned, they sometimes ran for re-election and won—by massive margins, thereby returning to Congress with a real mandate.

Tennessee? You looking?

Using Chat GPT with my Historian's Craft class tomorrow to talk about how tech tools can help you with reading comprehension, summary & outlining. Have had some problems with it not responding today, so hopefully the demo will work. Anyone else using it in class?
