The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi is banned in the PA Central York district. This book is about a Korean girl who moves to US; she struggles to fit in at her school bc of her name. This book reveals just how important our names are.

This school 5K responsibly composted their orange slices, banana peels, and paper cups. We had water stations along the route with volunteers collected cups. This is a great idea for schools across the country. Great idea for marathons too. We can make a difference!

A TX county was ordered by a fed judge to return kids books to the shelves that they banned. The judge deemed it unconstitutional. The commissioners now want to close the public library. They would rather deprive access to books, to reading, than follow the law.

There is a long list of banned books in the Central York PA District (441 of 457 bans are in 1 district). The book I'm highlighting this week is Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, a beautiful memoir told in verse with the Civil Rights Movement as the backdrop of her childhood experience.

Just watched a beautiful story called Lunana: Yak in the Classroom (2019). A young teacher from a city in Bhutan is required by the govt to teach in the remotest school room with no electricity or school supplies. The teacher's self-discovery of humanity is heartfelt and palpable.

81 years ago today Roosevelt signed an EO that incarcerated 120,000 Japanese Americans in internment camps.
I'm currently reading a MG book called Farewell to Manzanar, which tells the story of how families lived in 1 of 10 camps. Highly recommend for teens (and adults) to read our history.

"Thank you, Omu" by Oge Mora is a beautiful story about kindness, sharing and community. What a wonderful way to get to know your neighbors through food. The artwork is also amazing where Mora using collage, paint and clippings of typed text.

In Duval County, FL, 176 books have been banned, one of which is Dumpling Soup by Jama Kim Rattigan, and Lillian Hsu-Flanders. It's about an Asian family making traditional foods.
