Doing pieces on how privileged and well-resourced people are taking more risks with #COVID is manufactured consent. It leaves out the many stories of people who are being excluded from society and can't get access to essential needs like medical care due to lack of protections.

Here's my piece on the Cochrane study. We need to stop giving so much air to bad faith actors spreading disinformation. Their goal is to exhaust us and numb us into losing empathy and giving up. Masks protect ourselves and our communities. Let's use them!

I have always felt this way about #climate . And I feel the same about #COVID -19 and pandemics. Science is great and helps us a lot. But we cannot solve global crises with science alone. We need big intersectional movements led by the people who are most impacted.

What Japan did in 1918 was so effective in changing long-term behavior that 100 years later everyone in Japan wears masks voluntarily despite there being no mandates these days.

It's important to say that higher risk people deserve joy too! They deserve to participate in the full range of public life. That's why masks also make sense in many settings beyond essential spaces & why we need to keep trying to reduce #COVID spread with other measures (ventilation, better vax).

The role of masks and mask mandates isn't to single-handedly prevent all #COVID transmission. Mask policies help flatten the curve during surges, and keep essential spaces open and accessible during continued high transmission. They've been very successful at doing that when used.

For specific spaces where people are able to wear masks continuously like in hospitals, on public transport, and yes, even schools, studies show mask mandates are effective in mitigating #COVID spread. They serve a key role keeping essential spaces open and accessible to all.

There's a lot of disinformation claiming "mask mandates don't work on the population level." These lies ignore the nuance: even when broad mask mandates were in effect, #COVID was still being spread in social spaces and at home when masks came off. Masks can't work in spaces they aren't being worn.

Love the symbolism of using an electronic traffic sign to display the # of COVID-19 deaths. It's common practice to warn drivers about previous accidents to help educate people about driving more safely. Yet when advocates do the same about #COVID , they are labeled "fearmongers."

"Although we don't know yet for certain, trends we see in the data suggest that #COVID infection could be acting in certain settings like a disease accelerator, amplifying risk for a diagnosis that individuals might have otherwise received later in life."

Also, it isn't "harm reduction" when you do almost zero education about the protections we all need to partake in, or provide the public health tools people need (like N95s) for free. The word you are looking for is abandonment.

Pfizer made a record $100 billion in 2022, almost $57 billion of which was from its COVID-19 vaccine and Paxlovid.

Yet they still want to charge people $130 per dose, and refuse to share vaccines and treatments with the world.
