Film studies folks: I am selling some of my old books on eBay, if you're in the market. Mostly British cinema and horror but some other topics as well.

Yesterday, pieces of an alien object from space came to Earth, landing in the Utah desert... and scientists are thrilled.
After all, it's not every day we get pristine pieces of an asteroid for us to study!

Paul Thayer Florence: Controversial books are necessary for students to develop critical thinking skills
“Reading a diversity of books with multiple viewpoints saves us from being stuck in an echo chamber, preparing students for difficult conversations with those they might disagree with,” writes Paul Thayer Florence, who attended school in Utah.

I wasn't sure I would ever finish Kim Stanley Robinson's Ministry for the Future. It's informative. There are some excellent moments. Overall, though, it's dry and kinda boring. And yet...I'm glad that I read and finished it, and I think it's important. I'd recommend it as an important climate read.

"Of course there is always resistance, always a drag on movement toward better things. The dead hand of the past clutches us by way of living people who are too frightened to accept change." Kim Stanley Robinson, The Ministry for the Future

They Cloned Tyrone was so good! 🔥 The acting was great, the script was clever, and the whole thing came together so self-assuredly that you'd never know it was the director's feature debut. I also loved what they did with the cinematography.

Interstellar is truly one of Nolan's best films, if not his best film hands down. There's so much emotion. The performances are incredible (except the "the dust" kid in that one scene). And the sound! Killer. It's harder to watch now that we're further in climate catastrophe but still gorgeous.

People who hate Claire on The Bear season 2 are projecting. For most of the season, she's working. At an ER. Because she's a doctor. She's not a manic pixie dream girl. She's barely in the show! We don't know her enough to be bringing these critiques.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through Kim Stanley Robinson's The Ministry for the Future, and I just can't pick it up during these heat waves and summer fires. It's a hard time to read a (very long) near-future sci fi novel about global warming, even if it is supposed to be hopeful.

WHY WHY WHY can't we start using drone lightshows for this??? Play celebratory music without the booms and bangs? Better for all, including the environment.
Alberto Pastor @albertopastor"July 5 is the busiest day of the year at animal shelters, as pets often run away from home trying to escape all the noise. They're often found many miles away, disoriented and exhausted. And pets aren’t the only animals that can suffer from fireworks."

MISS GRANNY is a film I love so much I included it in my must-see list for a museum's film exhibit. Hwang Dong-hyuk (who created Squid Game) directed this movie. Also, a review of TALE OF THE NINE TALED 1938. Enjoy!

Anyone else out there watching The Crowded Room? I'm like halfway through and not fully sold on the plot that seems to be developing (so, so slowly). The performances are good but the plot seems maybe too predictable, like its revelations are either obvious or kinda cheap/tired.

Rolling my eyes so hard at that article reaching for (non-existent) romantic or sexual tension between Sid and Carm in The Bear. Platonic friendships and partnerships exist! And are lovely! Also, Sid deserves a life outside of work. Dating your business partner is a bad idea.
