For whatever reason, the weekly SFPL book sale was awash in French titles today, including these gems, which I quickly snatched up. I used to assign the Green when I taught "Representations of Paris through the Ages" but I lost my copy at some point.

Using the last day of my AMC+ trial to watch MESSIAH OF EVIL (1974) by Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz even though I was very tempted to just rewatch WATCHER (2022) for this #FemaleFilmmakerFriday . MESSIAH OF EVIL (aka DEAD PEOPLE) is #43 of my #52FilmsByWomen .

Following on REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE, POSSESSION, and PERFECT BLUE, the "wtf did I just watch?" series continues tonight with CELIA (1989) by Ann Turner, #42 of my #52FilmsByWomen . An Australian tale of a cute girl, her pet rabbit, and a lot of messed up sh*t.

Day 31: For my final #AugustEquality #ThrowbackThursday selection, I present MORVERN CALLAR (2002) by Lynne Ramsay. More of a vibe than a plot, one of those meticulously crafted, dreamy films that haunts you, even when you’re not quite sure you understand it, or perhaps because you don’t. #Movies

Day 30: BANDE DE FILLES (GIRLHOOD) (2014) by Céline Sciamma. Another coming-of-age tale, but this time on the wrong side of the Paris tracks. Compassionate, joyful, engaging, and “beautiful like diamonds in the sky.” #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 29: MUSTANG (2016) by Deniz Gamze Ergüven. A deceptively breezy story of five sisters growing up in a remote Turkish village and how they navigate their limited options. Each sister has a distinct personality and their dynamic is utterly charming. #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 28: REVENGE (2018) by Coralie Fargeat. If you know me at all, you know this French action-horror mash-up was bound to show up at some point. Not your typical rape-revenge thriller. One of the most visually and sonically striking films of the past decade. #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 26: Women’s Equality Day double feature: GIRLFRIENDS (1978) by Claudia Weill and WALKING AND TALKING (1996) by Nicole Holofcener. What better way to celebrate Women’s Equality Day than two of the all-time classics on friendship and life in the big city. #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 25: UNPREGNANT (2020) by Rachel Lee Goldenberg. If you liked Haley Lu Richardson on THE WHITE LOTUS, check her out in this road trip buddy comedy about a Missouri teen needing an abortion. BOOKSMART meets NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS meets MIDNIGHT RUN. #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 24: Today's #AugustEquality #ThrowbackThursday selection is THE HITCH-HIKER (1953) by Ida Lupino. One of my favorite noirs of all time and one of the best takes ever on the “masculinity in crisis” aspect of the genre. #DirectedByWomen #Movies #OldMovies

Day 23: QUEEN OF KATWE (2016) by Mira Nair. This film is everything you’d think a Disney sports movie directed by Mira Nair would be. Delightful. Heartwarming. Colorful. Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo are great, but Madina Nalwanga carries the film. #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 22: LES INNOCENTES (THE INNOCENTS) (2016) by Anne Fontaine. A French doctor (Lou de Laâge, again!) working in Poland just after WWII. The cast is superb, the cinematography stunning, and the treatment of its complicated themes deft and even-handed. #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 21: RESPIRE (BREATHE) (2015) by Mélanie Laurent. A dark coming-of-age story about a new friendship (obsession?) going horribly, horribly wrong. Lou de Laâge is mesmerizing in this debut from Mélanie Laurent. #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 20: FIRST COW (2020) by Kelly Reichardt. This western was the last movie I saw in a theater before the shelter-in-place went into effect. At the time, I had no idea it would be almost two years before I'd be back, but this was a good one to go out on! #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 19: BEFORE I FALL (2017) by Ry Russo-Young. On the surface this may seem to be just another teen movie, but in fact it is HEATHERS, wrapped in GROUNDHOG DAY, inside of LOOPER. Very entertaining, with a terrific lead performance by Zoey Deutch. #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 18: BEYOND THE LIGHTS (2014) by Gina Prince-Bythewood. This movie is part NOTTING HILL, part Nina Simone biopic, with a bit of a sports movie thrown in for good measure. Minnie Driver is pitch perfect as Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s obsessed stage mother. #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 17: Today's #AugustEquality #ThrowbackThursday selection is DEAR FRANKIE (2004) by Shona Auerbach. This heartwarming Scottish family film follows a rather clichéd rom-com type of plot but makes something really special out it. Elevator pitch: CODA meets YOU'VE GOT MAIL. #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 16: STORIES WE TELL (2012) by Sarah Polley. I’m not a big fan of documentaries, but this one—a meditation on family, memory, truth, love, and loss—is pure poetry. A personal mystery that illuminates all the stories we tell ourselves and each other. #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies

Day 15: WATCHER (2022) by Chloe Okuno. I caught this on a coast-to-coast flight last fall and liked it so much I rewatched it on the return. One of my favorite endings in recent memory. Every woman’s “Does that dude seem creepy to you?” fear come to life. #AugustEquality #DirectedByWomen #Movies
