They are common, as they were planted with glee in years past. But problems have revealed themselves. Apparently they are on CA's invasive species list. Here's a nice summary of Bradford pears and why they're a problem.

That looks like a Bradford pear. While pretty, they're a widely planted invasive species. They're sterile, but can cause harm to other varieties thru cross-pollination. Several states have banned their sale. Clemson University has offered native trees free for every BP cut down. And the SMELL!
