"White America loves to consume our humor but long ago declared independence from the culture out of which our humor is born and nurtured."

And that is too bad because Black humor could heal the nation."

I just published Independence From Black Joy

Thank you for this. White people: An excellent way to learn more without bothering Black people is to virtually attend church services at any Black church. I’m not religious but I’ve learned a lot about Black joy this way.

We will be happy on Black BBQ Day, July 4, 2023! My people have earned that day off! We are all about that joy and family! #blackjoy

We all need to laugh at ourselves. Growing up in Hawaii, I thought everyone did this???

The article isn't so much about "people laughing at themselves." It is about how Black humor has been a driving force in our community and the American cultural world even though our culture is rejected and even hated by white Americans who then deprive themselves of the joy we have and share.

I was in 25 different foster & receiving homes with all shades of foster parents.

My kindest and most accepting by far was a black family. The moment the caseworker brought me through the door, I heard a kind woman say, this is big Daddy and you can call me big Mama. They made me feel comfortable.
