Almost 33 years after the ADA was passed, how is this still happening?!

Even when meeting the specified requirements, many solutions often fall short in terms of true accessibility, leaving individuals with disabilities to navigate challenges independently &, in some cases, placing them in potentially unsafe situations. #DisabilityRights #DisabilityAwareness

Many older buildings are not able to upgrade their facilities because of space issues. But the debate organizers should have known this was an issue and chosen a different venue.

Exactly. If you can’t bring in a temporary ramp, hold it elsewhere!

This is so unacceptable in this day and age. I really feel for Councilman Hinds. Hope some good comes from the reporting on the topic.

This is disturbing. ADA law is over 30 years old. They knew he was coming to speak. Another thought though.... citizens of Denver, ....if this gentleman was this determined to speak and stand up for himself, he's probably gonna stand up for the citizens as well. He sure as hell deserves your vote.

This has horrified so many of us in Colorado. I love my state and, most of the time, the direction it's headed... but I've been severely disappointed in how ableist it has been lately. We have many people fighting to address this and one of our state reps is working hard on it.

As a mom to a disabled child you wanna know my theory? Keep it as difficult as possible for disabled people to get around so they stay home. Out of sight, out of mind. My son rarely leaves cause he is too scared cause crap like this.

This is shameful, a disgrace, and humiliating not only for him but for every person who witnessed it. All the organizers of the event knew he is a wheelchair user. This was done purposely. They underestimated his determination and character. Cruelty is the point whenever you are dealing with the GOP

This incident was horrible, but I'm not sure the GOP had anything to do with it. Denver is one of the bluest cities in the nation. The GOP is dead here. This was something else - just as cruel and thoughtless, but something else.

The ADA was passed in 1990. The Americans with Disabilities Act will be 33 years old in July. It shouldn't take the anticipation of a disabled politician coming for buildings to be wheelchair accessible in 2023.

Mr Hinds' strength of character to say "screw you, I'm getting on that stage" speaks volumes about him. The fact that he has to do that speaks volumes to the rest of us that we need to be a better society and correct this and be vocal about accessibility.

Well said! As a part time wheel chair user myself- this is appalling & totally unacceptable! I applaud Mr Hind’s strength & determination but he never should have been put in that situation. Nobody should! 😥😡😠

As someone in the architecture and design community I have so many questions as to how this slipped through the cracks. As just someone with a heart, it’s unsettling and upsetting.
