Now, 60 years later, French is rarely heard, but Spanish and Portuguese are common. Whenever someone apologizes for their English, my standard reply is along the lines of "Don't worry, it's far better than my Spanish/Portuguese." 2/2

When I was a kid in the '60s, French was heard on the streets here in Massachusetts' Merrimack Valley because of the large number of people who cam down from Québec to work in the mills. So, we were taught French starting in the fifth grade. /1
