I always thought of Peter Pan as a story about a typical early-20th century white boy's fantasies, and a little girl who fails to fit in them until she becomes a damsel in distress and mother figure. The story is fine for what it is, but you can't update it with just a few cosmetic changes.

What we don't need is yet another white female fantasy story, where the female lead becomes the ally--nay, the leader--of the "exotic" peoples against the oppressives. We got that with Maleficent, and it was awful. I haven't seen the new PP so I don't know.

I dunno, the racism is important to the cartoon movie; the idea of "exotic" females lusting for the lead is a staple of white male fantasy stories, as well as the white fem considering the "exotic" woman as her unequal, and her rival. If Peter Pan a story about an English boy's fantasies, it fits.
