thread 1/4
I'm reading Parable of the Sower. It gives a lot to think about: one, how different people handle the fear of living on the edge of calamity, with no safety net. In Lauren's world, the government does not exist to help anyone except the wealthy. Everyone must decide how to live with death so close.

thread 2/4
Lauren muses about the nature of God. This makes sense b/c her father uses God to justify his way of life (defending, loyalty). But she finds that her idea of God is more neutral, chaotic. Still, she respects her father b/c both she and he are not afraid to look at the hard truth of their situation.

thread 3/4
Lauren finds herself disgusted with her best friend, who gets scared and doesn't want to talk about the harsh realities surrounding them. But, the dad is the voice that Lauren needs to hear: if you want people to work with you, you can't just scare them away. First, give them the tools they need.

Just finished the part with Cory reacting to her favorite child running away. When this conflict comes, she accuses her spouse (Lauren's father) of sacrificing one of his children to save the whole. It sounds like she's telling on herself, of what she would do (i.e., this looks like foreshadowing).

In response to B L.
We'd all be wise to live our lives as if death is so close.

Because death IS so close.
