The impression I'm getting from people on Spoutible is that many want more of a private chat feel, amongst like-minded people (like a virtual club), rather than an open forum where divergent beliefs can, at any moment, intrude on you; like a stranger interrupting your dinner w/ acquaintances.

I'm really good with divergent beliefs expressed civilly.

But imagine a party where strangers and robots interrupt your conversation to hurl bigoted, racist, or homophobic comments at you, or accuse you of being a pedophile for opposing fascism. That's #Twitter today.

1) I certainly see that happening. Accusations about people's motives and name calling are an issue across the board politically.

It's a problem that chat rooms, social media sites, etc. have all tried to tackle in various ways, and once you hit millions of people, there's only so much you can do

2) To me it comes down to trade-offs and preferences.

That same random access to jerks has led to many great relationships for me on Twitter w/ non jerks. I can deal with the jerks for that gain, but I totally get people who would rather avoid it.
