The impression I'm getting from people on Spoutible is that many want more of a private chat feel, amongst like-minded people (like a virtual club), rather than an open forum where divergent beliefs can, at any moment, intrude on you; like a stranger interrupting your dinner w/ acquaintances.

I'm generally fine with spiders in my house, understanding they have an important part to play in keeping everyone in check, but if you're a spider and you hop and look like you're straight out of Guillermo del Toro's imagination...

Thou shalt not pass.

Life is everyday. It's the small moments, the mundane, the tasks that never end. If you only live for the "dream come true moments", the big victory, the thing you long for... you'll miss out on your entire life.

I'm increasingly convinced if you have a business -- any business, any industry -- & have friendly customer service, competent employees, and quality, punctual work... You'll be starting a franchise before you know it.

Small and large businesses are a disaster right now.

thread 7 Threaded Spouts
People often underestimate the frustration "stuff" can create. Physical objects usually come w/ an unending pull of tasks to be completed, looming upkeep, bitterness over non-use, & similar thoughts.

Translation: The more "stuff" you have, the greater the chance of dissatisfaction.

Contactless payment was elevated during the pandemic. "Tap the card! Touch nothing!"

Yet, at pretty much all of these places, I still have to enter my zip code to verify my card on the keypad...

If my homeownership is the original Star Wars trilogy, and the dandelions in my yard are the Empire, and we're the Jedi, this is my second year of ownership and the Empire is very much striking back. That New Hope was nothing but a false hope last year.

They. Are. Everywhere.

Was I living in a hole when Andor came out? Nearly at the end of the season, and it's one of the first genuinely good new shows I've seen in a long, long time.

For comparison, I found Mandalorian ho-hum, Book of Boba awful, and Obi-Wan part fun, part cheese, part meh.

I used AI to solve the age-old question:

Should the toilet paper roll be over or under?

AI: "According to the 1891 patent for the toilet paper roll... the correct way to place toilet paper onto the holder is in the 'over' position."

Today is a great day.

When people have a rough day, their answers are short and curt by default. Why is it so hard not to take that personally, like it's your fault? I'm the same way, so you'd think my brain would remind me to cut them slack instead of saying, "Don't be snippy w/ me; I didn't do it."

Went to some local garage sales. I am sad to report that yet again, despite numerous signs explicitly stating "garage sale", there were no garages for sale.

Maybe one day.

I've lived in my house for 2.5 years and never been able to figure out what three light switches did. Tonight, the mystery behind two of them was finally solved.

I'm both incredibly satisfied but also disappointed. I had bigger hopes for their mysterious use...

Look. If somebody wants to break into my city water account and pay my bill, I will not be calling anyone about identity theft, I'll be taking my wife out for dinner.

If a movement is successful, it will inevitably disconnect from its origins.

When the ceiling for one generation becomes the floor for the next, where else can you go but further? Quitting while you're ahead is rare when you can't relate to the struggle it took to win it.

Reminder to young people who deflect w/ buzzwords but offer no substance & then block.

People aren't born with an innate catalog of history & information. You can claim to be anything you want, but noobs & experts are worlds apart. Don't go into politics if you can't have adult dialogue.

Parenting heads-up:

Putting a toddler in your bed is a death warrant to quality sleep.

Despite knowing this, at 4:30 a.m., you will immediately put the toddler into your bed believing it to be both the right and best decision.

I wish there was a giant "panic/kill" button for Zoom & Teams calls that you could hit in an emergency. It would switch off the camera, mute your mic, & somehow indicate to others that you're indisposed while tackling an unexpected situation like fighting ninjas or (more likely) explosive diapers.

Paraphrasing is natural. It can also be beneficial.

Unfortunately, it's very easy to RE-phrase (and thus, reframe) while paraphrasing, tainting the original source.

Get 2 or 3 paraphrases away w/ this same rephrasing and... well... you can see a regular way relationships are needlessly tested.

If you have:

- Accountability (Consistent & unfettered)
- Transparency (Explicit communication + total humility)

Your life will be dramatically different than most people's.

I say this knowing how hard it is to maintain the above, but also having lived in the fruit of it.

"We discipline our kids so that they can discipline themselves." - Elisabeth Elliot

Discipline doesn't just mean "punishment for being in trouble." A disciplined person lives a life of self-control for a specific purpose.

We could use more discipline these days.

A hard thing to do as a fiction writer is to step back from your book and remove scenes that reveal parts of your character well, but bloat or impede the pacing overall, and which contain something you can reveal in a more concise way.

I get that brown is a great color for healthy, natural food products, but if you make an item the shape of a candy/granola bar with a dark brown package and there's no chocolate...

Your food license needs to be revoked.

🧵 TOPIC: ECOMMERCE

Interested in getting into selling something online?

It's both easier and more complicated than you may realize, but here are three things you may be interested in:

1) A platform to sell your product
2) A way to take payments
3) A shipping service
