Thanks for clarifying. And that meme is great.

Maybe at some point we'll get a sarcasm font or color-indicator when statements are intending to agree and jest/add to, not argue or disagree with.

If I had a nickel for every time my comments were taken the wrong way...

I knew someone would take this angle. So, FWIW, I don't use weed killers & understand they are for food, tea, etc.

That said, I live in a US neighborhood with neighbors who I try to be courteous to and mindful of, as they are to me. If I let DLions get crazy, it impacts them, too.

Acting, writing, pacing, production... it's all solid. I can nit-pick a few things, but overall I'm left excited for the next episode. Been hard to do one at a time, but trying to make it last.

Articles say the guns were purchased over previous years and there's no timeline on when the mental health issues started.

Lots to address in this tragedy, but your spout is not helping.

Agreed. There's a time and a place for confronting that sort of behavior and learning to discern what's unfolding.

I was referring to more of a "typical" daily interaction, where the history may be unknown or healthy; I'd like to be calmer and helpful, VS short or curt in reply by default.

It's true. Some lash out for reasons other than just being short on patience at that moment. Even then, I'd like my default to be more gracious because replying in kind fuels the fire needlessly.

I think this is the rub, one group wants the guns fully gone thinking they're the problem, the gun owners think people are the problem and guns are just an outlet for deeper issues.

Compromise requires concessions, but it sounds like both groups want it their way with no middle ground.

I can see why you might think I'm more concerned about the gun owners, but I neither own guns nor like to coddle anyone.

Compromise, in my experience, requires understanding arguments from both sides, & de-escalation through language, which the original tweet didn't & you asked why.

5) I would argue tact and patience are vital to change. Alienating people before you even begin is a bad way to do that, even if you disagree with their reason for being frustrated.

It's about finding middle ground and if you treat an opponents view with respect, you'll get much further.

4) I don't know any gun owners who aren't frustrated by the shootings, suicides, & loss of lives. But using words, phrases, or statistics that distort the details & inflame tension against ALL people who have guns is a perfect way to shut down openness before it can begin.

3) The VGA founder also says the media only focuses on the 5%, the MSs, & he would like to see attention given to the other 95% of gun violence. This frenzy is what politicians focus w/ legislation geared towards that which won't touch suicides or gang violence. The new def. may not be helping.

2) Even the founder of VGA, the (basically) creator of the new definition, admits his broader definition created more hype & attention, which he desires. Gun owners know this, & believe it's emotional manipulation that neither addresses the core issues, nor brings people to the table reasonably.

1) Might take me a few spouts due to character limits. Bear w/ me.

The general public doesn't understand the difference, but has been conditioned historically to understand it as murder, w/ both a mental weight & specific type of image that comes to mind when you say the phrase "mass shooting."

It uses a different definition of mass shooting than the FBI, the traditional one. Many readers don't understand the implications of this switch.

The tragic deaths of our youth by guns is mostly by suicide, & 2nd by inner city violence, not MS.

Unique challenges requiring different solutions.

Serious question: do you want to have progressive dialogue about this topic w/ gun owners? Spouts like this mingle and distort information, tragic as it may be, that will immediately shut down any chance at dialogue with an open-minded gun owner because it reads dishonest or ignorant.

Do tell. Put the def. of fascist and then list how he meets that defined criteria.

You can disagree with someone by presenting a better argument, not by broadly applying a label as if that means anything and destroying a word that has real implications.

Threading would help across the board with engagement. I know Twitter worked for years without it, but once it was streamlined, I find discussions improved & nuance finally entered the picture. I've tried all sorts of ways here to no avail. Comments break them up, order issues, etc.

I don't... Too little time, too many other good books to get to. Maybe if the reviews come in I might check those out to see if it's worth considering, but just like I don't like every album a band puts out that I love, I don't always like every genre my favorite authors to try.

Social studies doesn't debate or explain the differences in world views of Muslim versus Christian versus Hindu, or see history thru their lenses

The original spout equates teaching various ethnic groups' history to teaching g&q studies. He didn't say teaching the history of LGBTQ people or "studying LGBTQ individuals in history."
