"master this skill completely before moving on"
"memorize these words 100% before reading"
etc

In my experience, and the experience of many others:

go for it!

Exposure in reading/speaking will *help* with memory

Always made sense to me too!
but that's not the advice of a lot of 'traditional' language material.

When I was younger and I broke with this advice, I felt like I was doing something so radical. lol

I've always been fond of speaking with speakers and writing notes and stories. The process is more enjoyable and makes me more creative, engaging my thinking, recall (bringing it forward), and memory (storing the new I learn).
