If the inhabited territories plus DC became states, the US flag would have 56 stars. There would be 112 Senators, and probably 444-445 voting members of Congress, based on population.

The expansion of democracy and equity? Immeasurable.

This is based on the average population per member of Congress being between 7 and 8 hundred thousand, currently. By that measure, all except Puerto Rico would get one, and Puerto Rico would be between 4 and 5. Plus two Senators apiece, of course.

As to why I argued statehood- there's not really another option, under our existing system, to give them equal representation. The only alternatives might be to combine them, or attach them to an existing state, and given how geographically disparate they are that seems unreasonable.
