If the inhabited territories plus DC became states, the US flag would have 56 stars. There would be 112 Senators, and probably 444-445 voting members of Congress, based on population.

The expansion of democracy and equity? Immeasurable.

This is based on the average population per member of Congress being between 7 and 8 hundred thousand, currently. By that measure, all except Puerto Rico would get one, and Puerto Rico would be between 4 and 5. Plus two Senators apiece, of course.

I agree that the territories should get representation, but 2 Senators for the Northern Marianas with a population of 47k would seem a bit unfair to Californians with 2 Senators for 39M. In order to make it truly fair we would have to make some big changes to the Constitution.

Hardly more than the existence of WY and VT is unfair to CA.

The whole purpose of the Senate is to give each state equal representation regardless of size, with the House being representative of population.

You can argue its unfair, but that's an argument against the entire existence of the Senate

As to why I argued statehood- there's not really another option, under our existing system, to give them equal representation. The only alternatives might be to combine them, or attach them to an existing state, and given how geographically disparate they are that seems unreasonable.
