We installed one the spring after the first really bad smoke summer here in Seattle, so we had it designed to take a MERV16 filter - essentially hospital grade. The next time there was awful smoke, we (and friends and neighbors) were inside our house breathing clean, cool air.

In response to Trust Facts.
It's been eight years or so, so I don't remember the initial costs. Seattle has cheap electricity so it was comparable for heating. At peak cooling it's using about 1 KW or so - but we also don't cool below 75°F during the day. Also we have solar panels so the cooling costs are nil during the day.
