Someone here on Spoutible was lamenting the days before 45, the days when things were, to his mind, calmer and less hateful.

White Americans, please learn the history of our country. Voter suppression has been going on since day one. Filthy lies about Black people are not new.

I always hated the people righteously saying, “This is not who we are” when Trump encouraged and amplified racism.
I said, do you know any US History?
This is not only who we are, but it’s literally codified throughout history.
We were born a nation that relied on slavery to exist.

I come from S. Oregon where racism has always been present. Americans up in these northern states tend to ignore the evil UNDERBELLY that has always been there. Well that underbelly has oozed out and no longer hides.

I think you mean white Americans ignore the underbelly. Black Americans don't have that privilege.

Republican politicians have been setting the stage for a Donald for years: Gerrymandering, suppressing the vote, packing the courts, ripping off taxpayers & consumers all the while getting rich & screaming "socialism" so that they need not pass beneficial bills for the people.

Absolutely--thank you, Ronald Regan. But the myth of white supremacy has been here since the beginning.

Republicans have been setting the Country up for a Donald for years: suppressing votes, gerrymandering, packing the courts, ripping off taxpayers & consumers, generally getting rich & being lazy. This is not to say Dems are perfect, but they have not wanted to end our Democracy. Their eyes are now

Great post! I believe a lot of white people are willfully ignorant of certain parts of America’s History. (Black ppl we cannot afford to know / learn our history) . 2023 and we are still battling for voting rights..
Some states worse than others. Smh

A lot of white people are in complete denial about their privilege. As Rev. Dr. King told us, those in power never offer to give it up. We need to demand they loosen their grip.

Learned to read on Vietnam War news. Survived bussing in Boston. Marched after Stonewall. On a plane to NYC on 9/11. Campaigned for Obama in TN. Calmer? Less hateful? Must be Canadian…

I have been lied to my whole life, by the American Public "Education" System. I think we need to totally rewrite the history books to include ALL of our history. It's already whitewashed, imo.

We all were. I was fortunate to live in a well-integrated neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago; I wen to school with Black kids, Asian kids (mostly Japanese), and white kids. We whites were in the minority. We didn't notice or care.

We still didn't learn our true history.

I am reminded of an All in the Family episode when Archie and Maude ( had to look it up as I misremembered it as being with Mike) were arguing about Eleanor Roosevelt and Archie said before her we did not even know there were Black people in the US

TaNehisi Coates: “Liberals today mostly view racism not as an active, distinct evil but as a relative of white poverty and inequality. They ignore the long tradition of this country punishing black success and the elevation of that punishment, in the 20th century, to federal policy.”

The good old “ grandfather clause” was a natural continuation of the evil wrought by the Wilmington Massacre of 1897, just three years before where the first duly elected multi- ethnic government was
Overthrown by a violently racist coup de’ etat.

Isn't that weird? I hear people say this too and I don't know how to even respond. We romanticize and fictionalize the past rather than simply saying: "I'm uncomfortable with how angry people are." or even "The world is changing and I'm not sure where I fit."

There were no good old days if you were from marginalized communities. The hate may have been veiled in some public spaces but it never left. We all need to unlearn the indoctrination that makes it invisible to our wyt eyes. Keep listening to the voices beyond your own group. 👀
