In the coming days we're going to get a lot of retrospectives and analysis of the Carter presidency, but here's what I know: when Carter lost to Reagan in 1980, my dad told a 10-year-old me "this is the worst thing to happen to America since Hoover" and I think he might have been right.

I think he was right, too.

My first vote cast after turning 18 was for Carter.

I did vote for Reagan in ‘84. It was an odd time.

I always wonder how different this Country would be had he won a second term

It was worse. Hoover received largely unwarranted blame for the stock market crash and beginning of the depression. (Biden could suffer a similar fate, btw.) More of Reagan's duplicity will see wider attention in coming years.

To wit:
'When you understand that Reagan was financed by the Mob and oil industry — his “Kitchen cabinet” was chock full of them […]. Reagan’s near assassination was about getting him on Team Deep State. It worked.'

Voted for Carter twice and we know your dad was right. From trickle down economics to the horrendous "war on drugs" which incarcerated many many more of our POC neighbors, to just name a few.

I was 17 when Reagan was elected. My parents voted for him. They believed they were losing out because of affirmative action. That was a topic constantly in our local papers on the radio. I grew up in a county that is 95% white. No one was taking anything away from these well-off paranoid fools.

I think it's fair to say that Reagan walked so Trump could run.

My mom told 10-year-old me much the same thing. We'd elected a former actor, and he was no Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Yes. We'd been listing that way since Nixon's Southern Strategy, but Reagan was the hard turn.
