An extraordinary headline. “Could lead to”??? Because as of now we’re all on the same page??? We’re fighting a proxy war against Russia. China is no friend of Europe or the US, but… that’s not a “rift”? When hasn’t there been a rift? The Times seems extraordinarily untethered to reality.

I haven't read the article yet but it's a given that China needs to maintain a "functioning" trade relationship with Europe and the U.S. We don't need that with Russia, and the only thing China needs from Putin is energy. A rift (in trading relationships) is more of a threat to China than the U.S.,
