Can anyone explain to me the purpose for taking over someone else's Instagram account? I have all of about 60 followers, all friends and family. Someone has taken over my account. Changed the email address, phone number and password. Why? Why not just open your own account. I don't see the point.

When scammers steal a real account they gain access to mailing lists, pics, and a kind of optical illusion of a valid account that's been up for a long time.

Sorry to sound daft, but what kind of mailing lists? Like my followers? I can see what you mean about it appearing to be a more established account.

Every message has data attached to it. Scammers use illegal tech to hack that data. As long as everyone has unfollowed the account then, eventually, they'll abandon it. I'm sorry.

My husband keeps telling me to just start a new one. I do need to tell people to unfollow.
