It's a coping mechanism.

We weren't just ignored, we were neglected. Being told you were going to be dropped off at a homeless shelter or taken out of this world was a common threat to Gen Xers.

We didn't love or respect our parents. We FEARED them.

Yeah, sadly so many of us "survived our childhoods" rather than "grew up".
