The bird app policy of charging for 2FA text messages got me thinking about 2FA in general. My computer IT friend suggested I start using the Microsoft Authenticator app and phase out 2FA, Twitter policy or not. He said: "It's perfect! I use it for several logins. And it's more secure than 2FA."

I thought authenticators, like the ones by Microsoft and Google, are a type of 2FA. You login with a username and password (something you know), then you enter a code from the app (something you have). Tokens like the SurePass ID are just a physical version of the digital authenticators.

I haven't played with the MS version much. The Google app provides options to receive the code by alternate means such as a phone call. That's really useful for me since I work in an environment where I can't have my cell phone so I just have the system call my work phone to get the code.
