The responses to the concerns about Spoutible’s content policy are evenly split between “OBVIOUSLY romance authors aren’t in violation, quit being hysterical” and “We don’t want smut-peddlers here, get your own app!” The policy is so vague even its defenders can’t agree on what it means.

I don’t care if there’s porn or not, but as a software dev and person who’s worked with many startups, moderation is a massive burden. A vague policy allows for missteps and restricting porn makes sense from a - should this platform succeed, kind of place. I just like the lack of right wingers.

I think you’re right that there are benefits to a siterunner maintaining a prerogative for discretion—but that requires users to place a lot of trust in the moderation team, and a defensive reaction to users asking questions (after being burned by other sites before) doesn’t tend to inspire trust.

This platform has been delightfully devoid of right-wing nonsense thus far, and I would also love for it to succeed, but it has been very disappointing to see respected authors and reviewers treated as trolls for raising concerns about moderation policies.

I have no problem with people raising genuine concerns or wanting certain clarifications.... But my issue with a lot of what I've seen posted as 'concerns', looks a lot like being disingenuous, spreading disinformation, and trolling

I’m sure there have been trolls. I don’t envy the task of trying to separate legitimate feedback from sealioning. But in my admittedly-small bubble, I mostly saw creatives who have been burned by platforms in the past wanting reassurance that things will be, hopefully better, but at least not worse.
