You're considering a (5yr to construct, 10yr to profit, 50yr operational life) electricity production facility. You know grid balance and battery tech (while lagging) are 10(?) years from addressing inconsistent production. Make ANY argument for using legacy, commodity-based (ie fossil fuel) inputs.

From a DM: "and if as additional renewable production comes on line, how does that change the usable life of the already in place fossil fuel systems - needing to meet only peak/trough demand until battery tech and grid management improve?"

We've done two solar projects on our house - back first and then smaller footprint front. If the sun is up, we're producing electricity (more than we consume, actually, thanks to window upgrades and appliance replacements). Batteries don't ROI yet, but they will in a few years and will do that then.
