When you went to high school, was there some kind of official or unofficial hazing of freshmen? What did it consist of?

Melissa & I were just talking about how when in HS in the early 90s (she graduated '91, me '94) the 1st day of the school year we gathered in the gym for the upper-classes to boo the freshmen. My guess is this school-sanctioned bullying was done to tone down more serious hazing of older times.

In high school, the most harmless form of hazing was sending us freshmen to the 3rd floor of the Humanities building. (There was no such thing.) The worst was (just for the boys) being tossed into the canal that ran alongside our school grounds and was at least 15 feet deep.

The latter was usually done by the school jocks to the small, weedy boys (as 14-year-olds tend to be). Some friends & I tried to save one kid from them, but got shoved against a wall & pinned while they dragged the kid to the bank and threw him in. Thankfully he was able to climb out. 😰🤬
