When you went to high school, was there some kind of official or unofficial hazing of freshmen? What did it consist of?
Professor Kyle @blackcatprose
Melissa & I were just talking about how when in HS in the early 90s (she graduated '91, me '94) the 1st day of the school year we gathered in the gym for the upper-classes to boo the freshmen. My guess is this school-sanctioned bullying was done to tone down more serious hazing of older times.

I remember being told not to ask upperclassmen where anything was because they would say that it was on the 4th floor. Our school had only three floors. That’s all I can think of, and that was obviously just a joke, not real hazing.

When I went to high school, it was 10-12 grade, while the 9th graders were the top of the Jr High pecking order.
I switched schools my 10th grade year, where 9th graders were the lowly freshmen. No hazing that I can recall, but I escaped being bottom of the heap.

In high school, the most harmless form of hazing was sending us freshmen to the 3rd floor of the Humanities building. (There was no such thing.) The worst was (just for the boys) being tossed into the canal that ran alongside our school grounds and was at least 15 feet deep.

Yikes!

I also graduated in '94. Bullying happened (with some serious assault sprinkled in), but full-on hazing? Eh. Every year, some upperclassmen would send a bunch of freshmen looking for the 3rd floor pool. We had no pool. It was pretty tame, as hazing went.

That happened for us too – Melissa just told a story of hearing an upperclasser telling a freshman to take the elevator...although our school was all 1 floor. That stuff was mild.

On my swim team they had to bring doughnuts once a week and we would occasionally get their bras wet and put them in the freezer during morning practice which lasted about 2 hours before class. 🥶

When I started high school my dad taught the law enforcement training course at the local technical college. He was also a reserve police officer and volunteer fireman in our small town. No one bothered me. I also got expelled halfway through my freshman year, so...

This is from my high school yearbook. We were made to couple up with a boy and 'kiss' the blarney stone. He seems to have found it more disgusting than I did. The whole 'winding up' process was harder... Bullies at work.

No hazing. Just standard bullying. Books knocked out of my arms in halls between classes. Shoes thrown at my head in “health” class when teacher was out of the room. Toilet water & lotion dumped over my head while changing for gym. One girl came after me with a hairspray can lit up like a blowtorch.

I went to public school school in Canada in the 80s. Jr. High was grades 8-10 & HS was 11&12. I graduated in 1989. There was zero tolerance for hazing of any kind, especially in any organized manner.
But as a 13yo I was so severely bullied my 1st week I refused to go back.

My mom got me into catholic school for Jr. high on a low income exception despite the fact I was an atheist. Ironically I really enjoyed it and was very confident by the time I went back to public HS

Interesting. Not to get generational, but I wonder if the freshman bullying stopped at some point – I feel like my class was the last one to get booed, and we never got paddled or anything.
