In 80 “Perry Mason” books by Erle Stanley Gardner (and 271 television episodes) Hamilton Burger and Lt. Tragg arrested and prosecuted the wrong people every time.

Every single one of the accused would have died in prison – or gone to the gas chamber – without Perry Mason.

There was some growth over the run of the series, but only by inches. Sort of a grudging mutual respect. But the police work never improved. They latch on to one theory only and then watch it blow up every time. You’d think there be some self-reflection!

There was even one episode that ended with the two of them having a smoke together.

There were only a handful of murders or suspicious deaths in my hometown in the 20th century. They were all bungled by police and/or the prosecutor.
