Can someone explain about the Alt Text for photos? Is there a reason for it? I mean, I get providing the name of a bird or a person but is there a reason otherwise? Are they searchable?

Thanks!

What everybody else said--they have it over on Mastodon too.

I'm told even a minimal description is helpful & appreciated, although I've seen some people write novellas!

My understanding is that it's for visually impaired folks who may be listening instead of reading.

Hi there elitely gorgeous Cat, and what a gorgeous question.

“Alt Text” on photos provides a way for screen readers to present information that would otherwise be exclusively visual to visually-impaired guppies.

(Plus you can sneak a joke in there to see who’s paying attention)
