This underlying faith is called The Social Contract. It's complex, but nearly everyone understands it implicitly.

It's why voting gives you that virtuous feeling. Because it's a common good.

A minor quibble: Money working because we all believe it is commodity fetishism, not the social contract.

The social contract is the belief that we should all give up some of our absolute freedom in exchange for the protection of a society governed by rules. One can have a society without money.
