When I was a kid in UT the President of the LDS Church announced that you couldn't be a good Mormon and a Democrat and backed the John Birch society in the 1960s. My parents being Democrats was how people knew we were not Mormon

I grew up in a conservative household too, and the one glaring thing I remembered was how little thought the GOP wanted their voters to put into voting.

We would literally get a sample ballot marked with the party preferences and a letter saying how as "good patriots" this is how we should vote.

Yep.

Nothing says "big tent party" like, "if you don't think how I do and cherry pick the same misquoted sections of the bible and interpret them the exact same way that I do, then get out."
