Point Loma Pam on Spoutible

Bill Traylor (1853 – 1949) is one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century. Born into slavery in Alabama, he began creating art prolifically in his 80s. It’s the only body of work made by a Black artist of his era to survive.

The central figure of the painting entitled “Man with a Yoke” is a striding man with a cobalt blue head, hat and pants. He wears a red shirt and a large rectangular yoke on his shoulders. Two smaller blue figures stand on the left and right of the yoke. Both are blue men in top hats. One holds out a flask and the other a cigarette. Floating above the central figure is a blue flying bird. Below the yoked man is a large red dog.
