2 Italian expressions I heard growing up I still use a lot

Porca miseria, which is literally 'poverty pork,' but is basically bloody hell or holy crap. In my family it was a bit stronger, like holy shit or what the fuck.

Meno male, which is literally 'less bad,' basically 'it coulda been worse.'

My parents were 3rd generation German and still spoke ‘low’ German (a dialect) with family and friends. I didn’t understand any of it but when they said “Ist das nichts schreckle?” I knew it was something bad. I found out later that it means, “isn’t that awful?” and that they’d been gossiping.

That's so familiar!
My mom, and my dad's parents, are from Italy. Whenever conversations were entirely in Italian (or dialect), I knew they were dishing dirt.
