As promised, the Bisa Butler Exhibition!

I had a thread on the other place, so I'm going to just borrow from that.

Bisa Butler is a textile artist who makes portrait quilts and I've never seen anything like them.

Tomorrow I'll put together a thread of some of the pics I took at the Bisa Butler exhibition when it was at the Art Institute.

I thought I had more, I'll have to look for them.

Her work is indescribable.

These portraits are all textiles. No paint.

Look at their eyes. I couldn't get over them.

Sorry alt text is tough for this thread, not sure how to best do it.

Check out this girl, her hair is made of flowers.

The longer you look at Butler's work, the more there is to see.

One of my favorites.

This was one of those exhibits where everyone talked to each other bc we couldn't get over what we were seeing.

Probably my favorite. The Equestrian, based on a real woman in the late 1800s, and you can see homage to her travels in the details, including parts that look like tiled floors and the Taj Mahal.

Just noticed the bystanders in the fabric of her hat for the first time posting this!

The depth and layers. This piece is called "I Am Not Your Negro," as per the placard.

There was a woman looking at this piece with me who could not get over what she was seeing, with the details so overwhelming yet harmonious.

Thank you for this. Her work is just magnificent. Doubly exciting...in addition to her talent and the verisimilitude to the original photos, she is at the forefront of elevating 'craft' to art and valuing it as such. I think that's so important. Textile art is ART.

ABSOLUTELY. I couldn't agree more, and as I've said, there will be an ENTIRE SCHOOL to follow Butler. She is revolutionary, unique, and will inspire generations of artists.
